The Air Pollution Table, with the participation of the administrations (City Hall, Generalitat and Metropolitan Area of Barcelona) and entities, which met today, has launched the creation of the monitoring group for the editorial staff of the Ordinance to establish the permanent Emissions Landing Zone
The measure, included in the Barcelona Air Pollution Prevention Program, aims to comply with the recommendations of the World Health Organisation and the commitment established with the European Union to reduce the pollution indices of urban conurbation which are above the threshold established by European regulations.
The permanent Emissions Landing Zone will enter into force on January 1, 2020. Barcelona joins in more than 300 European cities that have similar measures such as Berlin, London or Brussels to face the main source of Air pollution, which causes more than 350 premature deaths per year in the city and especially affects the health and cognitive development of the child population.
The introduction of the permanent Emissions Landing Zone, with a surface area of 95 km2 that includes Barcelona and areas of the surrounding municipalities in the rounds of Sant Adrià del Besòs, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat and Cornellà de Llobregat, will allow to reduce the 15 % of the air pollution we breathe in the most transit areas, and is the first step towards the reduction target of 125,000 vehicles in 2024.
