The objectives of the project are to reduce the number of bicycle lanes on the sidewalk, transform single-way double-lane cyclists, improve the conditions of the existing cycle lanes and increase the connectivity of the cycling network
The approval of this second construction project will also allow increased safety for cyclists, pedestrians and users of personal mobility vehicles.
The Barcelona City Council Government Commission has approved the second city cycle road construction project. This is the second phase of construction and improvement of the city's cycling network in accordance with the deployment of the "Bicycle Strategy for Barcelona" approved by the Municipal Plenary.
The second base project for bike lanes in the city seeks the fulfilment of four basic objectives:
- Reduce the number of bike lanes on the sidewalk and put them on a level road. This measure allows to minimise the conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists.
- Transform cyclists of two directions (bidirectional) into one direction (one-way), prioritising those axles with greater use by bicycles.
- Improvement of existing cycle lanes conditions. Among other actions, the adaptation to the criteria of the "Bike Track Design Manual" is foreseen.
- Increase the connectivity of the city's cycling network, with the creation of routes that serve the whole territory and that there are no discontinuities of connection.
These objectives of the second phase of the plan will allow cyclists to circulate more safely and comfortably on the bike lane. And on the other hand, it also preserves pedestrian safety.
It is also an improvement in the movement of personal mobility vehicles. With the expansion and more connectivity of the bike lanes, these vehicles, which have to travel through streets 30 and bike lanes, also improve the conditions in which they travel around the city.
The total budget of the second construction project based on bike lanes in Barcelona is 28.2 million euros and will allow this improvement of the connections and bike lanes of both the basic network and the secondary network of the city.
The use of the bicycle in Barcelona
Every day in Barcelona there are 205,000 bicycle trip, an increase of more than 50% since the "Bicycle Strategy" was approved. This has been accompanied by the construction of more bike lanes and the adaptation of the bike. public way so that these journeys can be done with maximum security for all users.
The city now has 209 kilometers of bike lanes, which makes practically all citizens (99%) have a bicycle network (bike lane, 30-zone or pacified roads) within 150 meters of the house. The city's bicycle lanes have gradually introduced the improvements provided by the "Handbook of bike lanes of the city of Barcelona" to make them safer. Among these improvements there are:
The bicycle link, which allows connecting bike lanes through a lane of shared traffic with motorised traffic where the speed at 20 km/h is limited.
The signposting to reinforce the unidirectionality of the bike lane.
Crossroads with the bicycle chamfer, exclusively for bicycles, limiting the use of space by motor vehicles.
The advanced zone for bicycles, to facilitate the turn when the traffic light of the rest of vehicles is red.
In parallel to the extension of cycle lanes and, in general, the city's bicycle network, the number of surface car parks has increased, reaching 34,859 in 2018.
